Google Pixel 2 & XL: Specifications, features and price
Google launched its second generation Pixel phones (4th Oct. 2017); Google Pixel 2 and other Google Pixel 2 XL. No doubt it has to compete with its rivals, majorly iPhone and Samsung. So the question is what Google has for us in the new smartphone? Hardware is very much similar to other flagship smartphones already out there, so what’s new in this?
The magic has been done at software level like advanced machine learning, most smart AI (artificial intelligence) Google assistant, ability to shoot better photos with single lens than phones with dual camera setup. No doubt Google’s strength is not there hardware (they buy most hardware parts) but their ability to optimize the hardware with their code (softwares) which helps them to get most out of their device, what else we can expect from such a search giant.
So talking about the design there is no major change in design except Pixel 2 XL which has smaller bezels than the predecessor and Pixel 2. Otherwise the phone is very much identical to the previous launches in terms of design.
The dimensions of Pixel 2 are 145.7 x 69.7 x 7.8 (lxbxh in mm) and weighs 143 grams which is quite light and slim. The device comes with a 5 inch FHD display with 441 ppi.
While the Pixel 2 XL has dimension of 157.9 x 76.7 x 7.9 (lxbxh in mm) and weighs 175 grams. It comes with a 6 inch QHD P-OLED display with 538 ppi and much smaller bezels than the Pixel 2.
Both the devices are water (upto 1m) and dust resistant (IP67 rated). Both have full aluminum unibody design and their display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Camera plays a major role in popularity of a smartphone and Google has really done some nice work on image processing algorithm. It’s really amazing to see such sharp and crisp images shot with a single lens camera which outperformed even iPhone 8 plus (in DxO testing) which has dual lens setup.
Both models of Pixel has same camera that is 12 MP rear camera capable of recording 4k videos and slow motion videos in higher frame rate. For selfie lovers Pixel is equipped with 8MP front facing camera.
Google has also introduced Augmented Reality (AR) which means you can insert live animation in your videos while recording and believe me it’s really cool feature you would love it.
Now talking about the core hardware used, both the phones run on Android Oreo 8.0. The devices house Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa core processor and GPU Adreno 540. For smooth multitasking it has 4GB of RAM. Both devices are available in two storage option i.e. 64 GB and 128 GB internal storage.
No external slot has been provided for SD card in both devices. The Pixel 2 is fueled by 2700 mAh li-ion battery while the Pixel 2 XL is fueled by a much bigger battery of 3520 mAh li-ion battery.
Another feature which has been provided in Pixel 2 XL and not in Pixel 2 is that it is squeezable from sides like we have seen it first in HTC U11, this feature can be used to trigger certain application but by default squeezing the sides will launch the Google assistant.
Moving to the sensors and security, both phones are loaded with all necessary sensors like Fingerprint (rear-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer. Both devices come with Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC but no radio. This time Google has too used USB type-C port.
I think Google has followed the Apple trend of ditching the 3.5 mm audio jack which is really bothering most of the users (at least for now). It’s really strange for most people why Google has not provided wireless charging?
Price of the Pixel 2 is $649 / £629 for 64GB model and price of Pixel 2 XL is $849 for 64GB model. For 128GB variant you need to spend an extra 100 bucks.
